Daddy Who?

After racing cars and playing in bands in the 70’s, Daddy Cool, also known as Steve Marshall, decided to settle down on beautiful Haida Gwaii. In 1982, Steve first opened an arcade, then purchased the bowling alley on Main Street (turning half of it into an arcade), then later converted the arcade to Schooners Dining Room and the bowling alley into Schooners Store (with the arcade in the back of the building).

But being a drummer and touring all over Western Canada, he always thought he could run a bar. So in March of 1988, Steve purchased Walter’s Inn from Walter Pomeranski. Before taking over Walter’s Inn, Steve was drumming in the small Hall in Skidegate wondering what he would call his newly acquired bar. In between songs, the audience kept yelling “daddy cool! Daddy cool!” After numerous repeated requests later, Steve said to the audience “in two weeks, there will be a bar in Masset called Daddy Cool’s named after this song…” then Steve proceeded to sing Daddy Cool by the Australian band of the same name. Daddy Cool’s Pub immediately became the hottest spot in Masset.

On April 1, 1997, the Canadian Military station was officially stood-down and was re-established as the Canadian Forces Station Leitrim Detachment Masset. Most of the Military personnel left and the town was concerned about the future of Masset. The Village of Masset put out a request for suggestions on how to market the town, and Steve suggested the town emphasize the fact that Masset is mile zero of the Yellowhead Highway “North” to Winnipeg. Nobody listened to him, so in 1998 Steve decided to do something about it himself and changed the name of Daddy Cool’s to Mile Zero Pub and Mile Zero Dining Room.

Almost 20 years later, Steve always missed the name Daddy Cool’s and Masset locals still referred to Mile Zero Pub as “DC’s” or “Daddy Cool’s”. So in 2017, Steve decided to bring the Daddy Cool’s name back and rename the bar to Daddy Cool’s Public House at Mile Zero and kept the name Mile Zero Dining Room.

Steve currently lives in Vancouver and his wife Luisa Marshall is a world famous Tina Turner Tribute artist who has been on Oprah and Ellen (www.LuisaMarshall.com). They have been touring all over the world with their family band. Since living in Masset over 25 years ago, Steve came up with an idea of a Theatre show called Relive the Music 50’s & 60’s which he finally put into production in 2018. They now tour with that show all over (www.ReliveTheMusic.ca). Steve comes up to Masset in the summer and usually gets in the way.
